Launching a Leadership Podcast: The Story Behind ‘Lead Out Loud’

In late 2016, my buddy Rex Williams and I launched a video podcast at Boeing. We shared a passion for challenging the status quo, frustration with corporate bureaucracy, and years of experience navigating it. We also knew many inspiring people within the company. The podcast was called The Movement Maker Show and it celebrated people within the company overcoming bureacratic obstacles to drive change.

After I left the company, Rex and I often discussed starting a new podcast on leading change. In late 2022, after years of discussion, a pandemic, and two presidential administrations, we finally launched The Distracted Driving Podcast.

Why 'The Distracted Driving Podcast' Needed a Reboot

The title “Distracted Driving” reflected our long-distance conversations during commutes, where Rex and I discussed distractions hindering change—and we also sometimes got distracted and missed our exits.

Over the next two years, we produced over 50 episodes with about a dozen guests. The bones of the show remained the same—short 20-30 minute episodes with interesting people challenging the status quo. However, over time, some of the details shifted a bit.

Rex’s schedule became more dynamic and more unpredictable, so I started to bring in a rotating series of guest hosts. I started a consulting practice and also joined my family's driving school. The latter made the podcast's title confusing to people who now thought the two were related. This prompted a reboot.

Introducing 'Lead Out Loud': Leadership Development with a Twist

Stephanie Van Assche was one of our guests on The Movement Maker Show. After starting Distracted Driving, we reconnected with her and invited her on the new show. During our chat, she inspired a new approach to leadership development: combining real-life experience, leadership principles, improv comedy, and Agile methodologies. Steph and I worked together for a bit creating a leadership development framework we ultimately named “Lead Out Loud.” Although she’s moved on to pursue other career goals, I continue to develop LOL content and have started making it available through a subscription-based model. This got me thinking...

Lead Out Loud is a much more straight-forward way to brand what this podcast has always been: a celebration of good-natured people who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. They understand proven principles of leadership and continuous improvement but also know how to assess a situation, adapt, and improvise as needed to get stuff done.

Is 'Lead Out Loud' the Leadership Podcast for You?

I’d be lying if I said it’s for everyone, but I think you’ll like it if:

  • You enjoy, as I do, the sound of my voice.

  • You are a change agent. Continuous improvement is in your DNA and you love to get ideas for new approaches.

  • You hate change and want to find out why it is so painful and how to make it better.

  • You work in a large organization and constantly feel like you are trying to make a U-turn in a cruise ship.

  • You work in a small organization and constantly feel like your speed boat is stuck making left turns and going to capsize on the ocean.

  • You like listening to stories, especially if it involves the folly of others.

  • You enjoy obscure pop culture references to things like Steve Martin’s Socrates sketch.

  • You enjoy useless bits of mostly true trivia (like Lucille Ball actually started podcasting in the mid-1960s).

  • You drive a lot and need a whimsical yet inspiring distraction to interrupt the lull of the road.

  • You have nothing better to do.

The show covers a lot of ground; sometimes silly, sometimes philosophical, but always through the lens of leading change. I enjoy celebrating people who have found ways to overcome distraction and persevere in the pursuit of improvement. I hope at least one episode provides you some value and helps inspire you to Lead Out Loud.
